Dr. Short, Director of the Clinical Psychology Program, of the George Mason University Psychology Department, was a pre-doctoral fellow at the Yale University School of Medicine from 1989 to 1990 and earned his Ph.D. from Arizona State University in 1990.  Since 1990, he has taught the following courses at George Mason University:  Abnormal Psychology, Assessment and Psychotherapy Supervision, Behavior Modification, Clinical Foundations and Ethics, Community Psychology Theory and Practice, Counseling Psychology, Group and Family Psychotherapy, Professional Seminar, Psychology of Adjustment, and Theories of Psychotherapy.  His research interests include family stress and coping, substance abuse prevention, and mental heath promotion.  He has developed and evaluated preventive interventions for older children and adolescents designed to teach coping skills, enhance self-esteem, and develop assertiveness skills to resist peer pressure. These skills are associated with less anxiety, depression, antisocial behavior, and substance use. His papers have appeared in the American Journal of Community Psychology, the Journal of Primary Prevention, the Journal of Social and Clinical Psychology, and the Journal of Divorce and Remarriage.
